Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Sarojini Nagar, Dr Rajeshwar Singh, has voiced sharp opposition to a letter of support reportedly written by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in favour of Umar Khalid, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case.
The statement has triggered a political response, with the legislator terming the move an unwarranted intervention in India’s internal affairs.
Taking to social media, Dr Singh asserted that foreign political leaders should focus on governance within their own jurisdictions rather than commenting on sensitive legal matters in another sovereign nation.
He stated that Mayor Mamdani’s remarks constituted interference and disregarded India’s established legal and constitutional framework.
Dr Singh also questioned the ideological stance behind the mayor’s outreach, pointing to Khalid’s prosecution under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the Delhi riots conspiracy case.
He further raised concerns over the mayor’s association with legal figures who have represented controversial clients abroad, arguing that such links reflected a troubling political posture rather than a commitment to justice.
Emphasising India’s independent judiciary, the BJP MLA stressed that ongoing cases must be allowed to proceed without external commentary or pressure.
He emphasised that democratic nations must respect each other’s sovereignty and legal autonomy, and said that public statements by foreign officials on sub judice matters undermine this principle.
Dr Singh concluded by urging international leaders to respect India’s judicial institutions and refrain from politicising sensitive cases, reiterating that matters related to national security and law enforcement fall strictly within India’s domestic domain.
