India pulled off a stunning victory at The Oval on Sunday, silencing England with a six-run win in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.
Harry Brook’s blazing century and Joe Root’s composed knock were not enough, as England’s pursuit of a record chase collapsed on Day 5.
Mohammed Siraj claimed five wickets, while Prasidh Krishna picked up one, as India sealed a miraculous result. With the win, India drew the series 2-2 and shared the trophy.
England Collapses After Strong Start on Day 5
England resumed at 339 for 7, needing just 35 more runs. Jamie Overton and Jamie Smith were at the crease.
Chris Woakes, ruled out earlier with a shoulder injury, practised left-handed batting on the sidelines, signalling he could bat if required.
Overton eased pressure early with consecutive boundaries off Krishna. But Siraj struck swiftly. He removed Smith, who edged a wide delivery, and then trapped Overton lbw with a tight call upheld by umpire Kumar Dharmasena.
Krishna produced a perfect yorker to dismiss Josh Tongue. This forced Woakes to bat one-handed with a sling on.
Siraj wrapped up the innings by dismissing Gus Atkinson, sealing his fifth career five-wicket haul. England were bowled out for 367.
On Saturday, India had posted 396 in their second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal led the charge with a brilliant 118, while Washington Sundar added a rapid 53.
The 374-run target was the highest ever set in a fourth innings at The Oval. The previous best chase here was 263 by England against Australia in 1902.
Brook and Root kept England in the hunt with a spectacular 195-run stand for the fourth wicket. Brook’s departure before the final session created pressure, but Root pushed on to score a century, almost sealing a famous win.
However, India held their nerve and completed a remarkable comeback to avoid a 1-3 series loss.
The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy now ends in a draw, but India’s fightback will be remembered as one of the finest in recent Test history.
