Thrissur Schools Introduce Zumba To Boost Student Wellness & Support Anti-Drug Mission

In a first-of-its-kind move, schools across Thrissur district in Kerala have officially integrated Zumba dance sessions into their daily routines.

The initiative promotes physical fitness, reduces stress, and supports mental well-being among students, while also reinforcing the state’s ongoing anti-drug campaign in educational institutions.

Education officials promote creative prevention methods

The Kerala Education Department launched the program as part of a broader strategy to discourage drug use among children and adolescents.

Officials believe that engaging students in constructive, high-energy physical activities like Zumba will help keep them away from negative influences such as substance abuse.

“Getting students involved in fun, interactive routines is an effective way to boost their focus, reduce stress, and promote positive habits,” said a department spokesperson.

Zumba: Part of Kerala’s statewide anti-drug drive

The Zumba initiative forms a key component of Kerala’s anti-drug mission, which includes the efforts of the Vimukthi Mission—a government-backed program aimed at spreading awareness and building resilience among youth.

Schools participating in the program are reporting improved classroom energy and increased student engagement.

Teachers and administrators in Thrissur have welcomed the initiative, noting noticeable improvements in student morale, participation, and overall enthusiasm.

“We’ve seen students becoming more energetic and involved, not just in Zumba sessions, but throughout the school day,” one teacher said.

By blending physical education with drug prevention strategies, Kerala’s schools are setting a progressive example in student-centred education policy.

The initiative highlights how innovative, health-focused programs can support both academic success and social responsibility.
