Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles has lauded India for its ‘tough decision’ to agree to a ceasefire with Pakistan following last month’s four-day military conflict.
He described the move as a clear ‘act of Indian leadership’.
Speaking, Marles called the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack ‘appalling’ and revealed that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was among the first world leaders to contact Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the incident.
“Firstly, we met the news of what happened in Pahalgam with utter shock,” Marles said. “This was an appalling attack, and Prime Minister Albanese personally spoke to Prime Minister Modi almost immediately after these events to extend condolences to India in respect of the loss of lives.”
Marles continued, “Even today, we reiterated that solidarity. We stand with India and all countries to combat terrorism, and we want to continue to work with India in combating terrorism in all its forms around the world.”
Ceasefire Reflects Indian Leadership
Turning to the ceasefire announced on 10 May, Marles welcomed the halt in military activity and praised India’s role in the decision.
“We acknowledge and welcome the stoppage in military activity. We actually see that as an act of Indian leadership,” he stated.

“We recognise the terror attack, which we condemn unequivocally, and in simple terms, we stand with India as we stand with all countries seeking to combat terrorism. That’s where the strikes stand,” Marles added when asked about the significance of India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’.
He further reaffirmed, “We look forward to working with India to combat terrorism in all its forms.”
Australia Supports India’s Right To Defend
Responding to questions on Australia’s stance regarding India’s right to respond to terror attacks, Marles confirmed his country’s support.
“Our Prime Minister very quickly extended his condolences and shock over the incident and the loss of lives,” he said.
US President Donald Trump further announced the ceasefire between India and Pakistan on his social media platform, Truth Social, claiming that US mediation played a significant role in ending hostilities. India has denied this claim.
When asked about Trump’s statements, Marles remained diplomatic: “Every country has an interest in living in a peaceful world, and we all appreciate the stoppage in military activity. We do acknowledge that this was an act of Indian leadership.”
Operation Sindoor
India further launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Indian forces targeted terror sites in air strikes, reportedly killing over 100 terrorists linked to internationally recognised groups.
