Pakistan on Wednesday cancelled all domestic flights to Gilgit and Skardu as tensions with India escalated following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.
An aviation official said the suspension was based on a safety review of Pakistan’s northern airspace. “All other flights to the northern areas of Pakistan have also been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure,” the official added.
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has been directed to monitor foreign flights closely, particularly those from India. Officials confirmed that inbound foreign aircraft are being thoroughly scrutinised under the new directive.
The decision follows a high-level meeting of Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC), which reviewed India’s recent moves. These include closure of the Wagah-Attari border, cancellation of SAARC visas for Pakistanis, expulsion of defence advisors, and suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
In response, Pakistan has shut its airspace for Indian airlines. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAMN) has been issued banning Indian commercial, military, and VIP aircraft. The month-long restriction affects carriers such as Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air.
Pakistan’s airspace ban is part of a broader reciprocal strategy. The move coincides with New Delhi’s diplomatic actions following the Kashmir attack.
In an emergency press briefing after midnight, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar warned of a possible Indian strike within 24 to 36 hours. He urged citizens and institutions to remain vigilant amid the escalating standoff.
The Pakistan airspace restrictions mark a significant development in the ongoing diplomatic and security crisis between the two neighbours.
