Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky began his private meeting with US President Donald Trump by expressing heartfelt thanks to First Lady Melania Trump.
Zelensky praised her recent letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging peace and highlighting the plight of children affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine and Russia.
“Her voice matters, and her care gives strength to this cause,” Zelensky said on social media platform X, emphasising the humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. He added that Russia has taken at least 20,000 children, highlighting how the war has torn apart families and separated loved ones.
I want to thank @FLOTUS Melania Trump for her attention to one of the most painful and difficult issues of this war – the abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia. We deeply appreciate her compassion and her letter to Putin.

Letter Exchange Between First Ladies
During the meeting, Zelensky presented a letter to Trump intended for Melania. “It’s not to you, (it’s) to your wife,” Zelensky joked, drawing laughter from the US President and attending press.
Melania’s letter, dated August 15, stressed the innocence of children and the responsibility of leaders to protect future generations.
“As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation’s hope,” the letter read. “As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few… so that every soul may wake to peace, and so that the future itself is perfectly guarded.”
Born in communist Yugoslavia and now a Slovenian citizen, Melania drew on her own early life experiences in the region to urge Putin to act decisively for humanity, not just Russia.
Even with Melania intervening and President Trump warning of severe consequences for non-compliance, Trump and Putin did not reach a ceasefire agreement during the August 15 Anchorage summit. Trump described the discussions as extremely productive but acknowledged key issues remained unresolved.
Following their White House meeting, Zelensky and Trump joined European leaders, including NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to discuss Ukraine’s security.
Trump indicated he would facilitate further talks between Putin and Zelensky, though he noted a ceasefire was unlikely before continued negotiations.
Zelensky described his discussions with Trump as productive, underscoring continued efforts to secure the release of prisoners of war and abducted children while seeking lasting peace for Ukraine.
