Local media reported that on Tuesday morning, French police opened fire on a woman who was wearing a hijab at Paris metro station. AFP news agency reported that commuters claimed the woman was shot after showing threatening behaviour.
The woman reportedly yelled “Allah Hu Akbar” and “You are all going to die” as she threatened to blow up the subway.
The woman “refused to follow police orders” and threatened “to blow herself up,” according to news agency AFP.
The Paris prosecutor’s office told news agency AFP that she suffered a potentially fatal injury to her abdomen after a single shot was fired by a police officer. The woman had no other weapons or explosives on her.
The fire department responded quickly to provide emergency medical assistance, and it was discovered that the woman had an abdominal gunshot wound. The incident took place at Bibliotheque Nationale de France station.
A spokesperson for the fire department confirmed that she was then taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance. It is reported that the woman’s condition is critical.
Citing sources, the daily newspaper Le Parisien and broadcaster BFM TV stated that police were looking into the possibility of an Islamist “terrorist” motive in light of the woman’s actions.
Authorities quickly evacuated the metro station in order to ensure public safety.
