The White House has officially announced that President Donald Trump will host South Korean President Lee Jae Myung for summit talks and a bilateral luncheon this week, following Lee’s arrival in Washington.
Trump will greet Lee at the White House at noon on Monday (Washington time) and then hold a 15-minute bilateral meeting in the Oval Office. The leaders will then attend a luncheon in the Cabinet Room at 12:45 PM, according to the White House.
While earlier announcements confirmed a meeting between the two leaders, the White House had not made the detailed schedule public until now.
Priorities on the Table
The summit comes amid efforts by the Trump administration to ‘modernise’ the US–South Korea alliance in response to China’s growing regional assertiveness. Security, trade and defence cost-sharing are expected to dominate discussions.
Earlier on Sunday, President Lee acknowledged that Washington’s demand for greater strategic flexibility of US Forces Korea (USFK) is challenging to accept.
He stressed, however, that conversations regarding the future role of the 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea are necessary.
Speaking to reporters aboard his flight from Tokyo to Washington, Lee said he intends to cover a broad range of topics, with security, tariff negotiations and defence arrangements topping the agenda.
The issue of US troop deployment remains a sensitive point in bilateral discussions. Washington has sought enhanced flexibility for the mission of its forces in South Korea as part of a broader strategy to counter China’s regional influence.
Analysts note that regional actors will closely watch the talks because of their potential impact on the balance of power in East Asia.
Both leaders will reaffirm their commitment to the longstanding US–South Korea alliance and explore ways to adapt the partnership to current geopolitical challenges.
Both sides see the summit as a critical opportunity to address strategic, economic and security concerns and to strengthen cooperation amid growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
