Trump Calls Indictment Charges ‘Unfair Legal Attack’, Rallies Supporters Against US Justice Department

After being indicted by federal prosecutors on numerous criminal charges on Friday, Donald Trump lashed out against the “corrupt” US court system on Saturday.

Charges of misusing confidential information

Trump is charged of 37 charges in total, which were made public on Friday focused on allegedly misusing confidential information, put the former US president in line for a much harsher legal outcome than the accusations of personal, political, and business misbehaviour he had previously mostly escaped.

Trump called the charges a legal attack

Trump spoke out against what he called an unfair legal attack on him before two state Republican conventions, first in Georgia and then in North Carolina. Trump said in his Greensboro, North Carolina appearance that, “You’re dealing with crazy lunatics.” He added, “The baseless indictment of me by the Biden administration’s weaponized department of injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country.”

Trump to appear in federal court in Miami

In Columbus, Georgia, earlier that day, Trump informed the crowd that he had to appear in court because he was running for presidential elections to be held in 2024. The two incidents occurred just a few days before Trump is scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami to answer the explosive allegations that he put the national security of the US “at risk” by deliberately holding on classified defence information, collaborating to obstruct justice, dishonestly hiding documents, and making false statements.

The charges carries sentence of 20 years in jail

Each of the accusations, made by Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith, carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Trump has already criticised the prosecution and referred to Smith as “deranged” and a “Trump hater” in a series of postings on his Truth Social platform in response to the charge. He said, “They come after me because now we’re leading in the polls again by a lot against Biden.”

Many Republicans supporting Trump

Many Republicans, including some of Trump’s competitors for the Republican presidential nomination, have so far responded by uniting behind the former leader. The indictment, according to Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy said, “A ‘dark day’ for the United States. I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump.”
