On Thursday, an unidentified assailant attacked a South Korean ruling party politician on a street in Seoul’s posh Gangnam area.
According to the report, Bae Hyun-jin, 40, was struck with an object believed to be a blunt instrument and rushed to the hospital, where her condition was described as ‘not life-threatening’.
The attack came less than a month after the country’s opposition party leader, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck while speaking with reporters in Busan. He had surgery and returned to work on January 17.
Former news anchor Bae Hyun-jin served as President Yoon Suk Yeol’s spokeswoman while he was president-elect.
Several high-profile South Korean politicians have faced public criticism in recent years.
Song Young-gil, the Democratic Party’s leader before Lee, was injured in the head with a blunt object in 2022.
Park Geun-hye, the conservative party’s leader at the time and eventually president, was attacked with a knife at a rally in 2006.
