The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reported on Monday that an Israeli operation in Khan Yunis killed 70 people and injured over 200 after the military warned it would forcefully operate in the region.
The military warning targeted the eastern Khan Yunis sector of the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone in southern Gaza, prompting thousands of Palestinians to escape.
Israel’s military stated that it would take action to prevent rocket fire in the area. Khan Yunis had already experienced significant violence earlier this year.
The latest incident occurred nine days after the health ministry said that 92 people were killed in a strike on Al-Mawasi, which Israel claimed was targeting Hamas’s commander.
Israel has sworn to destroy Hamas and has undertaken massive military operations in Gaza, which it earlier declared free of the militants.
Under pressure to establish a truce and free the hostages, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was on his way to Washington to address the US Congress.
More than nine months into the Gaza War, which began with the Palestinian militant group’s strikes on Israel on October 7, Netanyahu will meet US President Joe Biden, who has pressured him to commit to a cease-fire.
In late June, Netanyahu stated that the war in its intense phase was close to the end.
