A senior Hezbollah commander died in an Israeli strike on southern Lebanon on Tuesday, the Iran-backed militant group said.
In a statement, it identified the commander as Sami Abdallah, alias Abu Taleb, born in 1969, and reported his death with great pride and great honor.
According to a Lebanese military source, the commander was the most important in Hezbollah to be killed up to now since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which has fuelled bloodshed along Lebanon’s border.
The strike hit the hamlet of Jouaiyya, 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the Israeli border, killing three other people.
Exchanges of fire across the border between Hezbollah and Israeli forces have increased in recent days.
Clashes along the border have killed at least 458 people in Lebanon.
Israeli officials claim at least 15 Israeli soldiers were killed in that fighting.
Tens of thousands have been displaced.
