Deadly fighting erupted in Gaza on Tuesday as US top diplomat Antony Blinken supported a truce plan and Jordan hosted an emergency summit for the war-torn Palestinian territory.
Secretary of State Blinken urged the Palestinian Hamas group to embrace the ceasefire and hostage release deal.
During a visit to Israel, Blinken stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had reaffirmed his commitment to the proposed six-week ceasefire, which was also backed by a UN Security Council resolution.
“Everyone has said yes, except for Hamas”, Blinken continued.
Blinken went on to say, “And if Hamas doesn’t say yes, then this is clearly on them”.
Blinken then traveled to adjacent Jordan to attend an emergency summit for Gaza, where he met with Arab and World officials to solve Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.
The Israeli siege has left Gaza’s 2.4 million residents without adequate food, clean water, medicines, and fuel, forcing many to the edge of starvation. Only occasional aid supplies offer short respite.
