Following US President Joe Biden’s recent remarks characterizing several countries, including India, as “xenophobic” for their immigration policies, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar firmly rejected the assertions. Speaking with The Economic Times, Jaishankar underscored India’s longstanding tradition of openness and inclusivity towards diverse populations.
President Biden’s comments also included critiques of India’s economic performance, suggesting it was faltering compared to the US. Dismissing these claims, Jaishankar highlighted India’s robust economic growth, noting its status as the fastest-growing major economy and its ascent as the fifth-largest global economy.
Jaishankar emphasized that India’s openness is exemplified by initiatives like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), aimed at providing refuge to those facing persecution in neighboring countries.

Furthermore, Jaishankar criticized a segment of the Western media for biased coverage, citing examples like the ongoing anti-Israel protests in US universities as evidence of skewed narratives.
In response to potential diplomatic ramifications, the White House issued a clarification, stressing President Biden’s respect for allies like India and Japan, and reaffirming his commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre emphasized Biden’s focus on America’s immigrant heritage and his efforts to bolster relationships with key partners.
