Following an unprecedented attack on the Russian city of Belgorod over the weekend, President Vladimir Putin announced Monday that Moscow will intensify strikes on Ukraine.
On Saturday, an incident in Belgorod killed 24 people and injured 100 others. It followed a large-scale attack on Ukrainian cities by Moscow.
During a visit to a military hospital, Putin warned, “We’re going to intensify the strikes, no crime against civilians will rest unpunished, that’s for certain”.
Putin went on to say that Russia will continue to target military installations.
“We are doing that today, and tomorrow we will continue doing it”, Putin declared, nearly two years into Moscow’s offensive. He said that Ukraine claimed Russia had attacked it with a record number of drones on New Year’s Day.
Russian president described the Belgorod incident as a terrorist attack, accusing Ukrainian forces of striking right in the city centre, where people were walking, before New Year’s Eve.
Putin reiterated the idea that the West is using Ukraine to settle its problems with Russia. He stated that the strategic initiative in the prolonged conflict was on Russia’s side.
“In any case, that is how I am being briefed and I always insist: any offensive operations should be done after a defeat of the enemy”, Putin added.
