The External Affairs Ministry announced on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Indonesia for a two-day visit to attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit (EAS) on September 6-7, at the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Indonesia comes ahead of the G20 Summit, which will be held in New Delhi on September 9-10 under India’s Presidency this year.
Indonesia is a member of the G20 ‘troika’ because it held the grouping’s presidency last year.
The upcoming ASEAN-India Summit will be the first after India and the Association of South East Asian Nations bloc of countries elevated its ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022.
According to the foreign ministry, the Summit will assess India-ASEAN relations and map the future course of cooperation.
As to a release, the East Asia Summit would allow ASEAN leaders and its eight dialogue partners, including India, to exchange perspectives on regional and global challenges.
The ASEAN-India Economic Ministers convened in August in Indonesia, with the main agenda item this year being a timely review of the 2009 ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).
A joint committee agreed to a quarterly negotiation plan that will conclude the review of the ASEAN-India FTA in 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jakarta in 2018 at the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo. During the visit, both leaders decided to expand cooperation in all areas by forming a New Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to usher in a new era in Indonesia-India relations.
