The United States Geological Survey reported a 5.0-magnitude earthquake in Johannesburg on Sunday, shaking buildings across South Africa’s most populous province.
The USGS said, “The tremor hit at 2:38 am (0038 GMT) about 10 kilometres (six miles) below the surface”.
Buildings trembled across Gauteng province, where Johannesburg, the country’s largest city and business powerhouse, is located.
Residents across the province felt the tremor, and several shared photos posted on social media of minor structural damage to walls.
In August 2014, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck a gold mining community near Johannesburg.
The last big quake to strike South Africa was a 6.3-magnitude tremor that shook the Western Cape province in 1969.
