PM Modi Receives Ceremonial Welcome In Vienna, First Indian PM To Visit Austria In 41 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Federal Chancery in Vienna on Wednesday, marking a historic visit to Austria, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years.

This visit signifies a pivotal moment in India-Austria relations, as both nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic engagement.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer extended a warm reception to Prime Minister Modi, describing the visit as a “special honour.”

This marked the first meeting between the two leaders, setting the stage for discussions aimed at exploring the “full potential” of their bilateral partnership.

Arriving from Moscow on Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and anticipated fruitful discussions on enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

“I look forward to our discussions as we work together to further global good,” PM Modi remarked.

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is likely to engage in several key activities, including talks with Chancellor Nehammer and a meeting with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen.

He will also address business leaders from both India and Austria and interact with the Indian community in Vienna.

Vinay Kwatra Highlights Austria’s Key Role In Bilateral Cooperation

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra highlighted Austria’s significance as a central European country offering excellent opportunities for bilateral cooperation in infrastructure, renewable energy, high technology, start-ups, media, and entertainment.

He noted the promising start of the India-Austria start-up bridge launched in February 2024, which has strengthened trade and investment linkages.

“The visit will allow us to discuss various areas of importance in bilateral engagement, as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest, helping to broaden the scope of our partnership,” said Kwatra.

India and Austria continue to build on their Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Agreement signed in May last year.

Pavan Kapoor, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the potential for collaboration in technology, clean energy, and other key sectors.

“We are looking at different areas where we can work together, including infrastructure, clean technologies, and renewables,” Kapoor stated.

With over 30 large Austrian companies operating in India and significant Indian investments in Austria, both nations are keen to explore new avenues for cooperation, aiming to strengthen their bilateral ties and contribute to global development.
