US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called the recent car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort a ‘terrorist attack’, commending India’s prompt and professional response.
Addressing a press conference in Hamilton, Canada, on Wednesday, Rubio said, “Clearly, it was a terrorist attack. It was a car loaded with highly explosive materials that detonated and killed a lot of people.”
Praising India’s investigative efforts, he noted, “They need to be commended; they have been very measured and cautious and very professional in how they’re carrying out this investigation.” He added that New Delhi’s approach reflected its experience and capability in handling such complex cases.
While confirming that the United States had offered to assist, Rubio remarked that India was ‘very capable in these investigations’ and did not require external help.
“They’re doing a very good job of carrying out an investigation, and I think when they have facts, they’ll release those facts,” he added.
The US Secretary of State’s remarks came after his meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is in Canada to attend the G7 foreign ministers’ conference.
Following their meeting, Jaishankar posted on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as a ‘good’ discussion. He expressed appreciation for Rubio’s condolences over the loss of lives in the Delhi blast. The ministers also discussed ongoing trade talks and issues concerning global supply chains.
Jaishankar wrote, “Good to meet @SecRubio this morning at #G7 FMM. Appreciate his condolences on the loss of lives in the blast in Delhi. Discussed our bilateral ties, focusing on trade and supply chains. Exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict, the Middle East/West Asia situation and Indo-Pacific.”
On Monday, a car exploded near Delhi’s historic Red Fort, killing eight people and injuring more than 20.
In response, India’s Union Cabinet passed a resolution declaring it a terrorist act, stating, “The country has witnessed a heinous terror incident, perpetrated by anti-national forces, through a car explosion.”
The resolution urged investigators to act with utmost urgency and professionalism to identify and bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to justice.
When asked about potential tensions between India and Pakistan following the blast, Rubio said, “We’re aware of the potential that holds.”
However, he dismissed fears of escalating tensions, commending India’s composure and careful handling of the probe.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump, commenting on bilateral trade relations, said that India and the United States were ‘pretty close’ to finalising a trade deal that’s good for everybody.
Rubio’s strong condemnation of the attack and his recognition of India’s professional conduct underscore the continued strategic trust between Washington and New Delhi in addressing global and regional security challenges.
