“Peace restored”: Riots stop in Dublin, 34 arrested

On Friday night, peace was restored to the streets of central Dublin following previous night’s rioting, which was sparked by the stabbing of three children in the street, resulted in 34 people being arrested.

Following rioters’ rare acts of violence in the Irish capital, which included smashing storefront windows, setting fire to police vehicles, buses, and a tram, and fighting with police in and around O’Connell Street, police was on high alert.

On Black Friday morning, shoppers and tourists made their way back, passing police officers manning looted stores and removing burned-out cars. On Friday night, police made several arrests and chased a few people off the street, but otherwise the city was quiet.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said in a press conference, “Those involved, brought shame on Dublin, brought shame on Ireland and brought shame on their families and themselves.”

Following emergency treatment for serious injuries received in the stabbing, which occurred next to an O’Connell Street school, a 5-year-old girl was still in critical condition on Friday.

The nationality of a man detained in connection with the stabbings has not been revealed by the police, who claim they have not ruled out any motive, including whether it was terror-related.

The man is receiving treatment for severe injuries; he is in his late 40s. The police declared that they had no further suspects in mind.

After a small group of anti-immigrant protesters arrived at the scene of the stabbing and engaged in combat with police, police blamed far-right agitators for the violence.
