Moungi G. Bawendi, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) , Cambridge, MA, USA, Louis E. Brus, Columbia University,  New York USA and Alexei I. Ekimov, Nanocrystals Technology Inc. New York, USA shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry which was declared today.

The troika has been awarded this coveted award because of remarkable breakthrough in the realm of quantum dots which are ultra-tiny nanoparticles whose unique properties are entirely governed by their minuscule size. Quantum dots, an important component of nanotechnology, have found their way into our daily lives, illuminating the screens of televisions and LED lamps. They also serve as invaluable guides for surgeons in the meticulous removal of tumor tissue and other surgeries.

It is to be noted that this year’s Nobel award for Physics were awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier. Whereas,  Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman received the award for Medicine announced earlier this week.

However, wait continues for the declaration of Nobel awards for Literature, Peace, and Economics which is to be announced on October 5, 6 and 9 respectively.

The Indians who received this coveted award includes legends like Rabindranath Tagore, C. V. Raman and Kailash Satyarthi. It is now to be seen whether or not any Indian receive this world award this time.
