After attending the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Brasília on Monday for a State Visit to Brazil.
His visit marks a deepening of diplomatic engagement between India and Brazil, with bilateral discussions planned with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In a post on X, PM Modi described the Rio leg of his visit as ‘very productive’, noting that his upcoming meeting in Brasília would involve ‘detailed talks with President Lula on different aspects of India-Brazil ties.’

Focus on environment, health & climate justice at BRICS
During his address at the BRICS session on Environment, COP-30, and Global Health, PM Modi commended Brazil’s BRICS Presidency for prioritising critical global challenges such as environmental protection and health security.
He underscored that climate justice is not a political preference for India but a moral duty.
“For us, it is not just about energy, but about maintaining a balance between life and nature,” he stated.
Highlighting India’s long-standing cultural reverence for nature, he said, “In our culture, the Earth is respected as a mother. When Mother Earth needs us, we respond.”
With Brazil set to host COP-30, PM Modi noted that environmental issues have gained timely relevance.
“Climate change and environmental safety have always been top priorities for India,” the Prime Minister said.
PM Modi outlined India’s major environmental initiatives aligned with the spirit of ‘People, Planet, and Progress’.
These include:
- Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)
- Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (A Tree in the Name of Mother)
- International Solar Alliance
- Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure
- Green Hydrogen Mission
- Global Biofuels Alliance
- Big Cats Alliance
Prime Minister Modi also reflected on India’s G20 Presidency, highlighting the emphasis placed on bridging the divide between the Global North and South.
“We achieved consensus on the Green Development Pact and launched the Green Credits Initiative to incentivise environment-friendly actions,” he added.
Strengthening ties with Brazil
In Brasília, PM Modi will hold wide-ranging talks with President Lula, covering trade, technology, clean energy, and cultural exchange.
This visit reaffirms India’s commitment to enhancing its strategic partnership with Brazil, both bilaterally and within multilateral forums like BRICS and G20.
The Prime Minister’s State Visit reinforces cooperation between the two major democracies of the Global South, focusing on shared priorities such as climate change, sustainability, and equitable development.
PM Modi’s Brazil tour continues to highlight India’s proactive role on the world stage, blending diplomacy with environmental leadership and global partnership building.
