Aung San Suu Kyi, the head of Myanmar’s civil society who has been imprisoned since her overthrow by a military coup in 2021, has been pardoned as part of a junta amnesty for more than 7,000 prisoners to coincide with Buddhist Lent.

On Tuesday, Myanmar’s state media stated, “Chairman of State Administration Council pardons Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who was sentenced by the relevant courts”.
