The Kremlin warned on Tuesday that a clash between Russia and the US-led NATO military alliance would be unavoidable if European NATO nations dispatched soldiers to fight in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that European nations may send soldiers to Ukraine, though he stressed that there was no consensus on such a move at this time, as allies agreed to increase attempts to supply more ammunition to Kyiv.
“The mere fact of discussing the possibility of sending certain contingents to Ukraine from NATO countries is a very important new element”, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told media when questioned about Macron’s comments.
When asked by media about the risks of a direct Russia-NATO clash if NATO countries sent soldiers to fight in Ukraine, Peskov responded: “In that case, we would need to talk not about the probability, but about the inevitability (of a direct conflict).”
