Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, during talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, emphasized the need for India’s economic help. He said India’s backing is essential to his vision of a prosperous Sri Lanka. He also assured that Sri Lankan territory will never be used against India’s security.
Jaishankar, the first high-level foreign dignitary to visit since Dissanayake took office on September 22, held discussions with the President, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. He also met opposition leaders Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa.
Jaishankar and Dissanayake discussed energy production, LNG supply, and solar electrification projects. They agreed these initiatives would boost economic stability. Dissanayake highlighted the potential of exporting renewable energy to India, which could cut Sri Lanka’s production costs. Both leaders noted that Indian tourism can grow further, benefiting Sri Lanka’s economy.
Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to Sri Lanka’s economic recovery. He reminded that India was the first to provide financial assurances, which helped Sri Lanka secure an IMF loan. Jaishankar confirmed India’s willingness to finalize a bilateral agreement with Sri Lanka soon.
Jaishankar raised concerns about detained Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka. He pressed for their early release and proposed a meeting of the Joint Working Group on Fisheries. Earlier, Sri Lanka had released 50 Indian fishermen.
Both countries discussed security cooperation. Dissanayake assured Jaishankar that Sri Lanka’s security interests align with India’s. The visit ended with Jaishankar inviting Dissanayake to India and confirming India’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s recovery.
