1.77 Crore Mobile Connections Disconnected, 45 Lakh Spoofed Calls Blocked: Centre

The Centre has disconnected 1.77 crore mobile connections, which were registered using fake or forged documents, with the help of AI-based tools. Telecom service providers (TSPs) collaborated with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to implement this system.

The Ministry of Communications announced that 45 lakh spoofed international calls have been blocked from entering India’s telecom network.

Phased Implementation to Block Spoofed Calls

The advanced system introduced by DoT identifies and blocks incoming spoofed international calls. The implementation is occurring in two phases: at the TSP level to block calls spoofed with their subscribers’ numbers, and centrally to block calls spoofed with numbers from other TSPs.

The next phase of this centralized system will be commissioned soon, aiming to stop all remaining spoofed calls across TSPs.

Further Action on Fraudulent Connections

In hotspot cyber-crime districts, the Centre has disconnected 33.48 lakh mobile connections and blocked 49,930 mobile handsets used by cybercriminals. Additionally, 2.29 lakh phones involved in cybercrimes were blocked, and 12.02 lakh lost or stolen phones were traced.

Furthermore, banks and payment wallets froze nearly 11 lakh accounts linked to fake mobile connections. WhatsApp has disengaged 11 lakh profiles tied to these connections. So far, 71,000 SIM agents have been blacklisted, and 365 FIRs registered across multiple states and UTs.
