Indian Embassy Advises Indian In Bangladesh To Avoid Travel Amid Student Protest

The Indian Embassy in Bangladesh issued advisory to the Indians living in Bangladesh on Thursday to avoid travel in wake of ongoing massive student protest. The violent protest through out the country, so far, has resulted in at least 6 deaths.

“In view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh are advised to avoid travel and minimise their movement outside their living premises,” the advisory stated.

Issuing a 24 hour emergency helpline number, the advisory urged Indian national to reach out to High commission in Dhaka and Assistant High Commission in case of any  need and assistance.

According to local media, anti-quota demonstrators and supporters of the ruling Awami League party’s student section have clashed nationwide, turning student protests in Bangladesh violent.

According to reports, Up to six, including a child, lost their lives in the clashes between protesters and security personnel in the Shonir Akhra neighborhood of Dhaka.

There have been reports of protesters putting tires, wooden logs, motorcycles, and toll plaza booths on fire as well as acts of vandalism across the nation.

Students in Bangladesh are demanding the end of the 30 per cent reservation quota for the families of veterans of the 1971 Independence War amid surge in unemployment.

The court reinstated the quota system in June. In 2018, government has scrapped the quota system from government jobs.

Bangladesh’s prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, stated in a speech to the country on Wednesday that the government has already appealed the court’s decision to the highest court, and the Appellate Division has set a hearing date. Hasina affirmed that there is a chance to settle the matter through the legal system.
