PM Modi Reaffirms India’s Commitment To Natural Farming & Sustainable Agriculture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded India’s growing natural farming movement, stating that the country will continue to make agriculture both productive and sustainable.

In a detailed LinkedIn post titled ‘India and natural farming… the way ahead!’, the Prime Minister reflected on India’s strides in eco-friendly farming and the government’s ongoing support for farmers embracing these methods.

PM Modi recalled meeting a group of Tamil Nadu farmers in August who later invited him to the South India Natural Farming Summit 2025, held in Coimbatore on 19 November.

He noted that the MSME hub of Coimbatore, hosting a major agriculture summit, symbolised a shift in India’s agricultural imagination and confidence.

Calling the event ‘unforgettable’, the Prime Minister said he was inspired by the work of farmers practising diversified and chemical-free cultivation.

He interacted with farmers managing multi-layered farms producing bananas, papaya, coconuts, turmeric and pepper, alongside rearing cows, goats and poultry.

Others showcased efforts to revive traditional rice varieties and create value-added products such as chocolates, puffed rice and health mixes.

Science and Sustainability Converge

PM Modi highlighted the contributions of agri-innovators developing seaweed-based biofertilisers, bioactive biochar and climate-resilient soil enhancers.

He noted that these entrepreneurs are integrating modern science with traditional ecological practices while creating employment across rural and coastal regions.

He emphasised that while the farmers he met came from varied backgrounds, they shared a common commitment to soil health, community upliftment and sustainable enterprise.

The Prime Minister said India has made ‘commendable progress’ in natural farming, supported by initiatives such as the National Mission on Natural Farming, which has already connected lakhs of farmers with sustainable practices.

He added that the expansion of institutional credit through the Kisan Credit Card—now also covering livestock and fisheries—along with PM-Kisan income support, has strengthened the natural farming ecosystem.

PM Modi also highlighted the alignment of natural farming with the government’s efforts to promote Shree Anna (millets) and welcomed the growing participation of women farmers.

A Sustainable Path for the Future

PM Modi cautioned that excessive use of chemical fertilisers has damaged soil fertility and increased input costs.

Natural farming, he said, offers a direct solution through practices such as mulching, Jeevamrit, Beejamrit and Panchagavya, which improve soil structure, reduce chemical dependence and increase resilience to climate change.

Encouraging farmers to experiment with ‘one acre, one season’, he said, even small beginnings can lead to large-scale adoption.

He also urged farmers and young entrepreneurs to explore opportunities through Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs) and natural farming start-ups.

Concluding, the Prime Minister said he was inspired by the synergy between farmers, science and entrepreneurship in Coimbatore, expressing confidence that India will continue building a more productive and sustainable agricultural future.
