On Thursday, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis head, Abdulmalik al-Houthi stated that all ships heading to Israeli ports will be attacked, and not just those in the Red Sea.
The group has vowed to launch attacks on ships heading to Israeli ports in the Mediterranean Sea as part of a campaign of solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.
Al-Houthi encouraged China, Russia, Asian and European countries to avoid transporting commodities to Israeli ports.
Houthis have previously stated that their major targets are Israel, and its backers, the United States, and Britain.
“Everyone must stop transporting to the occupied Palestinian ports… It is in the interest of all companies to stop transporting to the Israeli enemy towards the Mediterranean Sea or in any direction”, al-Houthi warned.
The group attacks have increased the cost of shipping and insurance by interrupting a crucial trade route between Asia and Europe, forcing cargo companies to re-route to longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa.
