On Friday night, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Guatemala, although officials reported no casualties or material damage.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck around 11:52 p.m. (0552 GMT), seven kilometres (four miles) from the town of Taxisco at a depth of 108 kilometres.
Guatemala’s Seismology Institute said that the 6.0 magnitude tremor was felt throughout the country’s south as well as in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Antigua Guatemala, 45 kilometres southwest of Guatemala City.
Rodolfo Garcia, civil protection spokesman, stated, “No casualties or damage have been reported so far”.
Garcia went on to say, “Authorities were monitoring the situation at the national level”.
Guatemala is frequently hit by earthquakes due to its location at the intersection of the Caribbean and Cocos tectonic plates.
As per the authorities, 90 percent of Guatemalans’ terrain is earthquake-prone.
