Germany Turns Its Back On Nuclear, Switches Off Its Last Three Nuclear Reactors

Germany shut down its last three nuclear reactors on Saturday, abandoning atomic energy as it tries to transition away from fossil fuels and deal with an energy crisis brought on by the conflict in Ukraine.

Germany stopped its nuclear era early as several Western nations increased their investments in nuclear energy to cut back on emissions.

The RWE energy company said in a statement shortly after midnight that the three reactors had been unplugged from the power grid, calling it “the end of an era.”

Since 2002, the largest economy in Europe has sought to phase out nuclear energy, but former chancellor Angela Merkel hastened the process in 2011 following the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan.

Due to residual concerns about a Cold War battle and nuclear tragedies like Chernobyl in Ukraine, the decision to leave was well received in a nation with a strong anti-nuclear movement.

As she visited the tragic Japanese plant this week in preparation for the G7 summit there, Environment Minister Steffi Lemke declared that “the risks of nuclear power are finally uncontrollable.”

In various German cities, anti-nuclear protesters gathered in the streets to mark the shutdown.

The anti-nuclear movement’s driving force, Greenpeace, hosted a celebration near Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.

Green MP Juergen Trittin declared, “We are putting an end to a harmful, unsustainable, and expensive technology.”
