European Leaders Urge Restraint As Middle East Conflict Escalates

Amid intensifying military clashes between Israel, Iran, and the United States, several European leaders have issued urgent calls for restraint and a renewed push for diplomacy, warning of far-reaching global consequences if the conflict widens further.

Croatia warns of Geopolitical fallout

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic expressed grave concern on Monday over the growing confrontation between Israel and Iran. In a statement released through government channels and reported by Xinhua, Plenkovic said Croatia is ‘monitoring the situation with great concern’.

He warned that further escalation could raise energy prices, drive migration, and increase terror threats in Europe.

“Our position is clear, escalation should be avoided,” the statement read. “The Croatian government calls for restraint, calming of tensions, and de-escalation of the conflict.”

Serbia condemns US airstrikes as a violation of the law

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic condemned US strikes on Iran as a violation of international law, comparing them to the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.

“There is no doubt that the United States violated international public law,” he said, emphasising the importance of honouring the UN Charter and global norms.

Vucic also expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity for diplomatic resolution between Iran and Israel.

Italy calls for coordinated diplomatic action

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni urged coordinated diplomacy to halt Middle East military action ahead of the EU Council meeting.

“Only coordinated diplomatic action can ensure peace in the region,” she told the lower house, responding to the recent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Portugal reaffirms support for UN-led peace efforts

In Lisbon, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa issued a statement Sunday urging restraint and an urgent return to diplomacy. He reiterated Portugal’s support for UN and EU efforts aimed at preventing wider military confrontation.

Portuguese PM Luis Montenegro urged ‘maximum restraint and a return to talks’ on social media.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) issued a strongly worded condemnation of the US airstrikes, labelling them a “clear violation” of the UN Charter.

The party accused the US and its allies of pursuing a strategy of global domination.
