Gautam Adani: Dharavi Project Will Be India’s Most Transformative Urban Mission

Addressing the 33rd Annual General Meeting of Adani Enterprises Ltd, Gautam Adani declared that ‘our most transformative project is now unfolding in Dharavi’.

As Asia’s largest slum prepares for a historic redevelopment, the Adani Group’s vision seeks to convert this densely populated area into a vibrant and inclusive urban district.

Calling it India’s most ambitious urban rehabilitation project, Adani stressed the project’s goal to enhance the ‘live-work’ conditions of Dharavikars.

“We aim to build a world-class district rooted in the character of Dharavi while elevating the quality of life,” he said.

A vision of Dignified Living

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) will enable over one million residents to transition from cramped alleyways into thoughtfully designed homes.

The township will feature spacious layouts, dual toilets, schools, hospitals, parks, open spaces, and transit hubs—built with a focus on dignity and liveability.

Adani further described the Group’s ‘Dharavi Social Mission’ as a key pillar of the plan, encompassing healthcare, skill-building, and employment initiatives aimed at empowering youth and improving life outcomes.

The Dharavi Master Plan follows three foundational principles: economic renewal through redevelopment, ecological resilience, and inclusive development.

A key aspect involves building a network of public and green spaces—from large city parks to local playgrounds—ensuring residents enjoy access to walkable, open environments that support health and community bonding.

A central public space is also planned to host festivals and gatherings, inviting participation from all of Mumbai, thus turning Dharavi into a cultural as well as urban hub.

Transit-oriented transformation

Adani underscored the project’s emphasis on seamless mobility.

Dharavi will become a model for transit-oriented development, featuring multi-modal connectivity through a new metro corridor, integrated bus feeder routes, non-motorised transport lanes, and finely gridded street networks to improve last-mile access.

At its core, a state-of-the-art Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) is planned.

This hub will offer connections to inter-city, intra-city, suburban, metro, high-speed rail, airport express services, and city buses—all in one integrated location.

The MMTH will be India’s first such comprehensive transport facility.

Gautam Adani concluded that Dharavi’s transformation is not merely about redevelopment but about redefining urban possibilities.

“It’s about creating equity, accessibility, and opportunity,” he said, reiterating the Group’s long-term commitment to reshaping Mumbai’s heart and uplifting a million lives with dignity, connectivity, and resilience.
