EU Launches Humanitarian Air Bridge To Aid Lebanon

The European Union (EU) has initiated a Humanitarian Air Bridge operation, dispatching three flights from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Brindisi, Italy, to provide essential aid to Lebanon amidst the escalating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

First Flight Scheduled

The first flight is set to arrive in Beirut on Friday, carrying critical supplies such as hygiene items, blankets, and emergency shelter kits, according to a statement from the EU’s delegation to Lebanon, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Additional aid from Greece expect to transport in the coming days. Since last week, supplies from Spain, Slovakia, Poland, France, and Belgium have already reached Beirut.

The statement highlighted that these donations include medicines and medical supplies vital for assisting those in Lebanon who lack access to emergency healthcare, particularly the forcibly displaced.

Escalating Conflict

The humanitarian effort comes as the Israeli army has intensified airstrikes across Lebanon since September 23, marking a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah. The situation has further deteriorated since October 8, 2023, with both Hezbollah and Israeli forces exchanging fire along the Lebanese-Israeli border. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that this ongoing conflict has resulted in at least 2,141 deaths and left 10,099 others injured.

International Response

The EU’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance highlights the urgent need for support in Lebanon, as the country grapples with the devastating impacts of ongoing violence. The humanitarian air bridge aims to alleviate some of the suffering experienced by those affected by the conflict.
