PM Modi Hails Bodoland CEM Cup As A Festival Of Unity, Youth & Sporting Spirit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 123rd edition of his monthly radio address, ‘Mann Ki Baat‘, lauded the Bodoland Chief Executive Member’s (CEM) Cup Football Tournament, calling it a vibrant expression of unity and transformation in the Bodo Territorial Region of Assam.

“This is not just a tournament; it is a celebration of unity and hope,” the Prime Minister remarked.

Organised by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the CEM Cup is a large-scale, multi-tiered football tournament aimed at promoting peace, youth engagement, and regional pride through sports.

The competition is held at several levels—Village Council Development Committees (VCDCs), BTCLA constituencies, districts, and the Council level—making it one of India’s most inclusive sporting events.

PM Modi described a poetic scene of the sun rising over Bodoland’s hills as young footballers gather with excitement, transforming the region into a land of sporting enthusiasm and promise.

He said, “Bodoland today stands out in the country with a new identity… the energy and confidence of its youth are most visible on the football field.”

Impressive participation & growing recognition

Featuring 3,700+ teams and 70,000 players, including many young women, the tournament has become a grassroots sporting movement.

It is further strengthened by initiatives like football academies and Bodoland FC’s presence in events like the Durand Cup.

“This level of participation tells the story of a big change in Bodoland,” said PM Modi, noting that the region is now casting its glow on the sports map of India.

In a region once marked by unrest, the CEM Cup has emerged as a unifying force.

Meanwhile, by bringing diverse communities together through football, it fosters shared identity and social cohesion.

“There was a time when struggle itself was the identity of this place. But today, there are new dreams and the courage of self-reliance in their hearts,” said PM Modi.

Emerging football icons & role models

The Prime Minister highlighted footballers from Bodoland who are now representing the region on the national stage—Halicharan Narzary, Durga Boro, Apurba Narzary, and Manbir Basumatari.

These athletes, he said, have become symbols of aspiration for the next generation.

The CEM Cup not only encourages fitness but also instils discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

PM Modi said many young athletes rose from hardships and now inspire children nationwide.

“If we want to expand our capability, we must first focus on our fitness and wellbeing,” PM Modi concluded, urging young Indians to follow the example set by Bodoland’s rising football stars.
