A security alarm forced the evacuation of three levels of the Eiffel Tower in central Paris on Saturday, France’s most emblematic symbol which garnered 6.2 million tourists last year.
The site’s operator, SETE, said bomb disposal experts and police were scouring the area, including a restaurant located on one of the levels.
A spokesperson stated, “It’s a usual procedure in this kind of situation which however is rare”.
Visitors were evacuated from all three floors as well as the square beneath the monument shortly after 1:30 pm (1130 GMT).
The Eiffel Tower’s construction began in January 1887 and was completed on March 31, 1889. During the 1889 World’s Fair, it attracted two million visitors.
