The state prison institute stated that inmates in six Ecuadorian jails released the 50 guards and seven police officers who had been taken hostage in the latest bout of narcotics-related mayhem on Friday.
The jail guards and police officers were freed and are undergoing medical evaluation to verify their health status, according to the SNAI prison administration, who added that all appeared to be in good health.
Authorities revealed the hostage-takings on Thursday, but it is unclear when and where the guards and police were kidnapped.
