The Meteorology agency of the island stated that a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off Taiwan’s sparsely populated eastern coast on Sunday but was scarcely felt on the land.
According to the weather bureau, the epicentre of the earthquake was in the sea off Taiwan’s Taitung county, at a depth of 16.5 km (10.3 miles).
It reported just minor shaking in the county, which is mostly rural. The tremor was not felt in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital.
Taiwan is located at the meeting point of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.
