On Sunday, China’s Consular Affairs Office said that China’s Consulate General in Marseille filed a complaint with France after a bus transporting a Chinese tour group in the southern city had its windows damaged, resulting in minor injuries.
According to the statement, the Consulate General’s formal complaint asked France to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and their property.
Rioters attacked the bus on Thursday during the turmoil that has engulfed French cities in recent days following the police shooting of a teenager of North African descent.
According to the Consular Office statement, Chinese tourists have since left France.
“Chinese people in France or traveling to France should strengthen prevention and be more vigilant and cautious in light of the riots which have swept across the country in recent days”, the Consular office continued.
Rioting appeared to be less intense across France on Saturday, with tens of thousands of police deployed in cities across the country following the teenager’s funeral, however, there was some tension in downtown Paris and sporadic clashes in Nice, Strasbourg, and Marseille.
