Iran slammed Canada’s designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a terrorist organization as an unwise and unconventional politically motivated step, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani stated on Thursday.
“Canada’s action will have no effect on Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ legitimate and deterrent power”, Kanaani said, noting that Tehran has the right to respond to the listing.
On Wednesday, Ottawa designated the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group, potentially leading to the investigation of former senior Iranian officials living in Canada.
In 2019, the US took a similar stance against the Revolutionary Guards, whom Western nations allege of carrying out a global terrorism operation.
Tehran denies such charges, claiming that the special squad is a sovereign organization tasked with protecting national security.
