AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi visited the grave of Amir Abdul Qadir in Algiers on Sunday, paying homage to one of Algeria’s most revered freedom fighters.
The visit came as part of an all-party Indian Parliamentary delegation’s diplomatic outreach to Algeria and other Gulf nations.
Amir Abdul Qadir, a 19th-century military commander, Sufi scholar, and unifier of Algeria’s tribes, led the resistance against the French invasion of 1830.
He earned global acclaim for his moral leadership in warfare and actively protected Christian minorities during periods of civil unrest, demonstrating his deep commitment to justice and humanity.
Standing at the Muqam (grave) in Algiers, Owaisi shared his reflections on social media, describing Amir Abdul Qadir as ‘a military leader with a moral compass, Islamic scholar, Qadiri Sheikh, poet, and author of Al Mawaqif’.
He further added, “Hero for Algerians and all who oppose oppression and injustice.”
In an earlier post, Owaisi noted the Amir’s unique ability to unite the Arab and Berber tribes of Algeria, stating, “Amir Abdul Qadir was a Military Commander against French Invasion, United all the Tribes of Algeria, was a great Orator, Abraham Lincoln send his revolvers as a gift Saint Among Princes, the Prince among Saints Hero for Algerians and all who oppose Oppression and Injustice.”
Amir Abdul Qadir’s legacy continues to inspire movements for justice and spiritual integrity worldwide.
His resistance to French colonial rule earned him the title of Amir al-Mu’minin in 1832, following his father’s decision to pass leadership to him.
He later led a prolonged struggle against one of Europe’s most powerful armies, while maintaining principles that would now be recognised as early forms of human rights advocacy.
Owaisi’s visit forms part of a broader diplomatic mission led by BJP MP Baijayant Jay Panda.
The delegation includes BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey, Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma, Satnam Singh Sandhu, and former diplomat Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
After successful engagements in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, the group arrived in Algeria for high-level meetings to build international consensus against terrorism, especially in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam attack and India’s subsequent ‘Operation Sindoor’.
By honouring figures like Amir Abdul Qadir, the delegation aimed to highlight shared anti-colonial legacies and a mutual commitment to peace and resistance against injustice.
The visit also underlined India’s efforts to enhance people-to-people ties and strengthen diplomatic engagement across the Islamic world.
As the delegation concludes its Algeria visit on June 2, Amir Abdul Qadir’s legacy stands as a potent symbol of spiritual courage, national unity, and the enduring struggle against tyranny.
