Authorities stated nine Colombian soldiers were killed on Monday after their helicopter crashed in the northern Bolivar state, where the military is fighting the country’s biggest cocaine cartel.
According to President Gustavo Petro, the chopper crashed while bringing new troops for operations against the Gulf Clan.
Neither Petro nor the military specified the cause of the Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter’s crash, or whether the Clan, which has over 4,000 armed fighters, was involved.
