The Palestinian territory’s civil defence agency reported that an Israeli strike killed 31 Palestinians in central Gaza Sunday, as US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan paid a visit for conflict talks.

Israeli troops have advanced into Rafah, Gaza Strip’s far-southern city, which the army sees as the last Hamas stronghold and where the United States claims 800,000 civilians have been newly displaced by the fighting.

Hamas’s military wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, said it was firing mortars at Israeli forces stationed at Rafah crossing, which is now closed to humanitarian aid.

Israel has also fought and bombed resurgent Hamas troops in northern and central areas of the coastal territory that was previously thought to be under army control, prompting US worries that it could become mired in a lengthy counterinsurgency operation.

In the latest strikes overnight, Gaza’s civil defence organization reported, “An Israeli strike had killed 31 people and wounded 20 in a home in the central Nuseirat refugee camp”.
