3 More Nepalis Perish While Defending Russia Against Ukraine

Nepal government announced on Tuesday that three more Nepalese nationals fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war have died, bringing the total number of such deaths to ten.

According to the Foreign Ministry, more information about these Nepalese fighting for the Russian side awaited.

In addition to the three deaths confirmed in 2024, the Foreign Ministry revealed the death of seven Nepali nationals fighting for Russia in mid-December.

Previously, it was stated that the Ukrainian army held four Nepalese nationals fighting on the Russian side in captivity, but no further details were known.

According to the government, more than 200 Nepalese who traveled to Russia on tourist and student visas have joined the Russian Army without approval from the Nepal government.

The Foreign Ministry has frequently said that no Nepalese native is permitted to join any foreign army except those recruited in friendly nations such as India under a traditional agreement.

The ministry also stated that it has asked the Russian government to return the bodies of Nepalese soldiers who perished in the fighting as soon as possible and to compensate those who were injured.

On December 26, Nepal’s Foreign Minister N P Saud stated that over 100 Nepalese nationals, who joined the Russian Army had gone missing. The Foreign Office had spoken with the Russian ambassador in Nepal about the situation.

Saud further stated that there were at least four Nepalese POWs in Ukraine, and the government had approached the Ukrainian authorities to have them released.
