Spanish Woman Chokes On Food, Swallows Whole Toothbrush Afterwards

A 21-year-old lady used her toothbrush to get rid of a piece of food stuck in her throat and then swallowed the whole thing. Heizea, a Spanish woman from Galdakao, stated that on November 29, she choked on a turkey she was eating.

Heizea went for her toothbrush and started to use it to try and get the food out of her throat. But the toothbrush escaped her hand and she swallowed it whole.
Heizea clarified that since no one else was there to assist, she needed to move quickly.

“My dad couldn’t help me because he’s stuck in a wheelchair with a damaged Achilles tendon, so I decided to help myself by using the toothbrush,” she explained.
“Because it was only getting worse, I grabbed the first thing I could get hold of, which was the toothbrush, to try and dislodge it,” she said.

Her toothbrush also came free at the same instant the turkey did: “I tried to hold it by the bristles, but once the obstruction was cleared, it just got sucked in.”
The news outlet further stated that Heizea was taken to the hospital immediately after, but amazingly, she stated that she experienced no discomfort during the startling encounter.

She remembered telling hospital staff about her “bizarre” situation when she was first admitted. “They all started rushing around and couldn’t believe it until they saw the x-rays, and it really was there,” Heizea stated.

Following a three-hour assessment, the dental gadget was successfully removed by doctors during a 40-minute procedure while Heizea was sedated. They were able to avoid surgery by using surgical twine to loop the toothbrush head and pull it back through the esophagus.

“I woke up with the toothbrush next to me on the bedside table,” Heizea recounted, before continuing, “I was just glad I could breathe again.”
