Two Ghanaian MPs visibly honoured India on Thursday by wearing traditional Indian clothing during PM Narendra Modi’s historic address to Ghana’s Parliament in Accra.
One lawmaker paired a pagdi with a Bandhgala suit, while a female colleague rose to reveal her vibrant Indian dress, prompting applause across the chamber.
Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin halted proceedings to acknowledge the sartorial tribute.
“I recognise the honourable member is itching to visit India, and I will not withhold approval,” Bagbin remarked, also noting the second MP’s matching enthusiasm.
He thanked both for demonstrating ‘love for India, its people and their culture’ in Prime Minister Modi’s presence.
The gallery included Council of State members, diplomats, party representatives, civil society leaders, and Ghana’s Indian community.
Addressing them, Prime Minister Modi praised Ghana as a ‘land that radiates democracy, dignity and resilience’, bringing greetings from 1.4 billion Indians.
The Prime Minister pledged unwavering support for Africa’s Agenda 2063, stressing a demand‑driven, equal partnership.
“Our objective is not just to invest, but to empower—building local capacities and self‑sustaining ecosystems,” he said.
Earlier, President John Dramani Mahama awarded PM Modi the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, recognising his global leadership and commitment to India–Ghana ties.
PM Modi dedicated the honour to India’s youth, cultural diversity, and the historic bond between the two nations. The award marks his 24th international recognition.
In restricted and delegation‑level talks, PM Modi and Mahama agreed to upgrade relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, vowing deeper cooperation across trade, agriculture, digital technology, infrastructure, defence, and people‑to‑people exchange.
