PM Narendra Modi paid homage to Ghana’s founding President Kwame Nkrumah on Thursday at the Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.
Accompanied by Ghana’s Vice‑President Naana Jane Opoku‑Agyemang, PM Modi laid a floral wreath and observed a minute of silence, saluting Nkrumah’s lifelong struggle for freedom, unity, and social justice.
Posting on X, PM Modi wrote, “In Accra, paid homage to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He was a visionary statesman whose thoughts and ideals guided several people. He devoted himself towards the well-being of the people of Ghana.”
The gesture underscored India’s respect for Ghana’s independence hero and its commitment to deepening bilateral ties.
Nkrumah led the former Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957 and served as Ghana’s first President until 1966.
He also forged early diplomatic links with India, which opened its office in Accra in 1953, four years before Ghana gained independence.
Full diplomatic relations followed in 1957, laying the foundation for a warm, values‑based partnership.
Addressing Ghana’s Parliament earlier in the day, PM Modi cited Nkrumah’s famous words, “I am not African because I was born in Africa, but because Africa was born in me.”
Prime Minister Modi added that India, likewise, ‘carries Africa in its heart’, and urged both nations to pursue a future where ‘every child gets opportunities’ and ‘nations rise together, not apart’.
Prime Minister Modi’s stop in Accra marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to Ghana in three decades, reinforcing a relationship built on democratic ideals, diversity, and post‑colonial resilience.
After concluding the Ghana leg, PM Modi departed for Trinidad and Tobago, the second destination on his five‑nation tour.
