During his landmark address to Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, PM Narendra Modi declared that India is poised to become the world’s third-largest economy, citing a decade of transformation under stable political leadership and good governance.
“Today, India is the fastest-growing emerging economy,” PM Modi told the Ghanaian lawmakers. “On the foundations of stable polity and good governance, India will soon be the third-largest economy.”
PM Modi noted that India contributes nearly 16% to global growth and is quickly becoming a global innovation hub.
Highlighting the country’s dynamic economy and young population, he said, “India’s demography is paying its dividend. We now have the world’s third-largest start-up ecosystem. India is a global innovation and technology hub where top companies want to converge.”
He also celebrated the achievements of Indian women in science, space, aviation, and sports, pointing to India’s historic Moon landing and ongoing human spaceflight mission as signs of the nation’s technological rise.
PM Modi reiterated India’s collective commitment to becoming a Developed Nation by 2047, marking 100 years of Independence.
“The people of India have resolved to achieve this goal, and we are moving forward with strong determination,” he said.
Reaffirming India’s partnership with Ghana, PM Modi said, “As Ghana continues its path to progress and prosperity, India shall walk with you, shoulder to shoulder.”
He highlighted India’s longstanding engagement with Africa, recalling the India-Africa Forum Summit in 2015 and the African Development Bank meeting in 2017.
“We’ve expanded our diplomatic presence to 46 African countries,” he added.
PM Modi pointed to over 200 development projects across Africa that focus on connectivity, infrastructure, and industrial capacity.
Referring to Ghana specifically, he said, “We inaugurated the Tema–Mpakadan rail line, the largest infrastructure project in this region.”
He also acknowledged Ghana’s potential to emerge as an IT and innovation hub, especially under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
“Together, we will shape a future full of promise and progress,” he affirmed.
Earlier in the day, President John Mahama conferred on Prime Minister Modi the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the country’s highest civilian honour.
PM Modi accepted the recognition with gratitude, calling it a ‘matter of immense pride’ for India and its people.
