Thailand
Southeast Asian adventure seekers have always been drawn to Bangkok, the colorful and energetic capital city of Thailand. The vibrant energy, varied food, and breathtaking sights of the city might be thrilling, but they can also overwhelm some people.
In keeping with this dichotomy, Bangkok has the longest city name in the world—a mouthful that went viral recently thanks to a well-known video.
This isn’t just any string of syllables; the full name, “Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit,” is a poem-like expression that translates to “City of Angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra’s behest.” While most Thais use the shortened version, “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon,” the full name holds historical and cultural significance.

This distinctive feature of Bangkok was highlighted by the latest viral video, which features a tour guide giving a group of tourists the entire name of the city while the bus is moving, piqueing their interest and making them laugh. The video was shared by Wowie Jane Demerre on Instagram with a caption that reads, “The full name of Bangkok is recognized by the Guinness World Record as the longest name of the place.”
Even though the majority of Thais refer to him as “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon,” the entire name has cultural and historical importance. It honors the city’s illustrious past, its function as a royal hub, and its ties to mythology.
