Introducing ‘Bha’: A New Shoe Sizing System for Indians

A comprehensive survey on the feet sizes of Indians has paved the way for the development of a unique footwear sizing system tailored to Indian dimensions. Dubbed ‘Bha’ (भ), symbolizing Bharat, this proposed system aims to replace the existing UK/European and US sizing standards.

Spanning from December 2021 to March 2022, the survey encompassed 1,01,880 individuals across 79 locations, utilizing 3D foot scanning technology to analyze foot size, dimensions, and structure. Contrary to initial assumptions, the study revealed that Indian feet are wider than those of Europeans or Americans.

Addressing Footwear Challenges

The survey highlighted prevalent issues among Indian footwear users, including the widespread practice of wearing ill-fitted, extra-long, or tight shoes. Such practices have led to discomfort, injuries, and compromised foot health, particularly among elderly women and individuals with diabetes.

The Need for an Indian Sizing System

Historically, India has adopted UK sizing standards introduced during British rule. However, without accurate data on Indian foot structure and dimensions, the development of an indigenous sizing system remained elusive. With India emerging as a global footwear market powerhouse, the necessity for a tailored sizing system became apparent.

Proposed Recommendations

‘Bha’ proposes a streamlined approach with eight footwear sizes catering to different age groups and genders. Commercially, manufacturing sizes ranging from small children to adults would suffice initially, covering approximately 85% of the population. By standardizing sizes and eliminating half-sizes, manufacturers stand to benefit from reduced complexity and improved efficiency.

Path to Implementation

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR–CLRI) spearheaded the survey, with recommendations forwarded to the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and subsequently to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for approval. Pilot trials and user feedback sessions are envisioned before the anticipated implementation of ‘Bha’ in 2025.

‘Bha’ represents a significant stride towards enhancing comfort, fit, and foot health for Indians, while also streamlining manufacturing processes for footwear industry stakeholders. As India gears up to embrace this revolutionary sizing system, it heralds a new era of customized footwear solutions tailored to the unique dimensions of Indian feet.
